TL;DR: Once a year, clean the burners and igniters, check the oven gasket and cavity, wash the hood filters, test the knobs, confirm the range is level and anti-tip secured, and give the enamel and trim their care.

A La Cornue annual maintenance checklist covers six areas once a year: the burners and igniters, the oven door gasket and cavity, the hood filters and blower, the knobs and valves, the leveling and anti-tip device, and the trim and enamel. None of it is difficult, most of it takes minutes, and doing it on a schedule catches the slow problems, such as a hardened gasket or a clogged burner port, before they turn into a service call.

Why does a La Cornue need a yearly check?

A La Cornue range is built to last for decades, but it is a collection of hand-fitted parts that age at different rates. Seals harden, burner ports clog with spills, hood filters fill with grease and screws loosen with heat cycles. None of these faults announces itself loudly. They show up as a flame that has turned yellow, an oven that takes longer to preheat or a hood that has lost its pull. An annual routine finds them early, when the fix is a cleaning or a small adjustment. Pick a date you will remember, such as the start of the holiday cooking season, and work through the list.

What should you check on the cooktop and burners?

Let the cooktop cool, then lift off the grates and burner caps. Wash them in warm soapy water, rinse and dry them fully before replacing them. Our guide to burner cap and grate care covers the details for each finish. Inspect the burner ports for clogging, using a soft brush or a wooden pick, and never a metal pin that can enlarge the opening. Wipe the igniters gently with a dry cotton swab, since a film of grease keeps them from sparking. Then light each burner and look at the flame: a steady blue flame is right, while a yellow or lazy flame points to a blocked port or an air problem that deserves a service visit.

What should you check on the oven?

Open the oven door and look at the gasket along its whole length. It should be soft, intact and tight against the frame. A gasket that is cracked, flat or loose lets heat out and drives up the preheat time, and our oven door gasket care guide shows how to inspect and clean it. Wipe the cavity floor and walls when the oven is cool, following the advice in the guide to vaulted oven interior care. If your oven has catalytic panels, check them against the notes in our catalytic panel maintenance guide, because worn panels need replacing. Test the oven light and the door hinge action, and note whether the door closes smoothly.

What should you check on the hood?

A hood loses performance quietly as its filters clog. Remove and wash the baffle filters according to our guide on cleaning La Cornue hood baffle filters, dry them and refit them. Run the blower at every speed and listen for rattles or a change in sound. Test every light, and replace any that have failed. Look at the exterior vent cap or damper and make sure it opens freely, since a stuck damper reduces airflow. If the hood sounds different from last year, the blower or the duct may need attention, which is a job for a technician.

What about knobs, bezels and valves?

Turn each knob through its range and note any that feel stiff or loose. A stiff knob can signal a valve that needs service, as covered in our guide to a stuck or stiff burner knob, and a loose knob is usually a setscrew problem. Check the bezels and the finish with the help of our knob and bezel care guide. Do not lubricate valves yourself, and do not remove the knobs more often than needed.

How do you check stability and finish?

A range must sit level and be secured by the anti-tip device. Check with a level on the cooktop and the oven rack, and review our leveling and anti-tip guide if the range has moved. Then give the finishes their yearly care: enamel with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, brass with a polish designed for it if you want it bright, as in the brass cleaning and polishing guide, and nickel or chrome with the cloth and product the manual names. Avoid abrasives everywhere.

When should a technician do the check?

Some items belong to a professional: gas connections, regulators, valve service, igniter and safety valve testing, and blower repair. If you notice a gas smell, a flame that will not stay lit or an oven that struggles to reach temperature, stop and call. A yearly visit from an independent technician is a reasonable idea on a range of this age and quality, and our range repair page explains what a visit includes.

Keep a log. Keep a short log beside your manual or in a note on your phone. Write the date, the tasks you completed and anything you noticed, such as a burner that sparks slowly, a knob that has become stiff or a gasket that looks tired. A log turns vague memories into facts, and it helps a technician understand how the range has behaved over time. Photograph the flame on each burner and the state of the gasket once a year, so you can compare them from one year to the next. If something changes, you will have the evidence, and you will know whether it is time to act or simply keep watching.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a La Cornue range be serviced?
A yearly check is a sensible habit. Do the cleaning tasks yourself and leave the gas and electrical items to a technician.
What is the single most useful maintenance task?
Keeping the burner ports and the hood filters clean, because they affect both performance and safety.
Can I lubricate the burner valves myself?
No. Valve service is a technician’s job, and the wrong lubricant can cause a hazard.
My oven takes longer to preheat than last year. What should I check?
Start with the door gasket and the cavity, then book a visit if the gasket is sound.
